DW Sports files for administration

DW Sports has filed for administration, putting 1,704 employees at risk of redundancy.

Graham Newton and Ryan Grant from BDO have been appointed as joint administrators.

“The well-publicised challenges for the retail and leisure sectors from the impact of COVID-19 have significantly affected DW Sports’ business,” stated Newton. “However, we are continuing to trade while we explore the sale of as much of DW Sports’ business as possible."

Founded by former Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan, the company operates 73 gyms and 75 sports retail stores across the UK, but announced plans to shut 25 outlets last month.

Trading through the DW Sports website has also ceased with immediate effect, with the retail arm being wound down for good.

The gym business Fitness First will continue to operate as a separate company and its 43 clubs will be unaffected by the administration.

Retail should not be a high-risk occupation. As a company, we are focused on listening to our colleagues and customers to help them with the issues they are facing in-store and so far, the feedback on our body cameras has been excellent.
