Lidl expands trial of self-scanning tech to 37 stores

Lidl has announced it is expanding its Lidl & Go self-scanning trial to 37 additional stores across the UK, following positive customer feedback from the initial seven-store pilot.

The discount supermarket chain said it will roll out the tool to shoppers across Scotland, the Southeast, and the wider South of England throughout July.

Integrated within the Lidl Plus app, Lidl & Go allows customers to scan products as they shop, track their spending and savings in real time and complete their purchase seamlessly at checkout.

Shoppers use the feature directly though their own smartphones, which Lidl said bypasses the need for dedicated in-store scanning devices.

Lidl added that feedback from the first phase of the trial has positive and the technology particularly appeals to customers shopping with children.

The supermarket said the feature is also popular amongst those looking for flexibility during their shop, allowing them to shop at their own pace whilst managing their spending.

Lidl launched the self-scanning trial in May in shops located in Airdrie, Cardiff, Epsom, Glenrothes, Kingston, Guilford and Eastleigh.

“The early response from the initial phase of Lidl & Go has been really encouraging,” Louise Weise, chief customer officer, at Lidl GB. “Customers are telling us they value the control and visibility it gives them over their spend, and the flexibility to shop at their own pace.

“This next wave of stores brings the feature to many more customers, and we’ll continue to take on board feedback to evolve the offering as we go.”

Lidl said the expansion of Lidl & Go is part of its increased investment in digital innovation to make shopping easier, more convenient and more flexible for customers, while ensuring that traditional payment methods and staffed tills remain available across its stores.
