M&S to hire 10,000 seasonal staff for festive period

UK supermarket chain Marks & Spencer (M&S) has said that it will recruit 10,000 temporary workers for the festive period.

M&S said this figure represents a 40 per cent increase on 2022, and that it reflects “the additional investment M&S is making in colleague hours to support customers on the shop floor.”

The temporary workers will start from 19 November, the supermarket added, with a range of start dates, a variety of roles and flexible working patterns available.

Sacha Berendji, operations director at M&S, said: “Our fantastic store colleagues play such a big part in delivering the magic of M&S at Christmas to our customers. And this year we’re recruiting even more colleagues to ensure there’s always someone on hand to offer support and recommendations.”

Last week, Tesco and Sainsbury's both announced recruitment drives for the festive period.

Sainsbury’s said it will hire 22,000 temporary workers across the UK – a 22 per cent increase on 2022 – which includes 2,000 people to work in Argos stores. Tesco meanwhile is looking to fill 30,000 jobs mainly in its larger stores, unchanged from last year.
