Several UK supermarkets introduce purchase limits on fruit & veg

Several UK supermarkets have chosen to temporarily impose purchase limits on certain fruit and vegetables.

A three-pack limit per customer has been imposed on eight product lines by Asda due to what the supermarket describes as “sourcing challenges”. These include tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, salad bags, broccoli, cauliflower and raspberries

A spokesperson for Asda said: "Like other supermarkets, we are experiencing sourcing challenges on some products that are grown in southern Spain and North Africa.”

In a similar move, Morrisons has elected to temporarily restrict a two-pack limit on tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuces, and peppers while a spokesperson for discount grocer Aldi confirmed it is imposing limits on similar items to “ensure that as many customers as possible can buy what they need”.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has stated that Britain typically imports 95 per cent of its tomatoes and 90 per cent of its lettuces from December to March.

The restrictions come as growers in Morocco have struggled with cold weather, heavy rain and floods, with the issues exacerbated by supply chain issues due to recent ferry and lorry cancellations.

Spanish crops have also been affected by bad weather in the past three to four weeks, the BRC said.
