Tesco has said that will cut the number of team managers in its supermarkets as part of a new store strategy, impacting around 1,750 employees.
Over the past two years Tesco has been rolling out a new management structure in around 350 of its smaller superstores. The supermarket has decided to extend the strategy across all of its larger superstores and Tesco Extra locations.
This means introducing 1,800 new shift roles and reducing the number of lead and team members at its stores.
A further 350 employees will be impacted by the closure of eight pharmacies, the movement of overnight roles to the daytime in 12 stores, the reduction of hours within some Post Offices, the axing of some roles at Head Office, and the closure of its national operating centre in Milton Keynes.
The retailer is also closing all of its counters from the end of February due to a "decrease in demand".
The announcement comes after Asda said it would make changes which would see the loss of around 300 jobs and reduce pay for around 4,300 staff working the night shift.
“These are difficult decisions to make, but they are necessary to ensure we remain focused on delivering value for our customers wherever we can, as well as ensuring our store offer reflects what our customers value the most," said Jason Tarry, Tesco UK and ROI chief executive. "Our priority is to support those colleagues impacted and help find alternative roles within our business from the vacancies and newly created roles we have available.”
