Currys increases pay for the fourth time in 18 months

Electronics retailer Currys has announced a pay rise for around 10,000 store employees, the fourth in 18 months.

Minimum hourly pay will increase from £10.35 per hour to £10.50 per hour and to £11.50 in London.

Currys says the average bonus is 89p per hour, rising to £3 per hour for top earners, and this will take average hourly pay to £11.30 per hour.

The retailer added that employees who have passed a six month onboarding and skills development programme will see their hourly rate increased to £10.80 per hour, with employees in London earning £11.80 per hour.

Currys claims the programme, which consists of workshops and training sessions, helps employees build confidence and learn transferable skills.

Commenting on the news Paula Coughlan, chief people, communications and sustainability officer at Currys, said: “We know that investing in our colleagues is the most important thing we can do, especially with the continued cost-of-living crisis. This latest increase means that we are one of the highest paying retailers in the UK.”

Marks and Spencer recently announced that it would increase hourly pay from £10.20 to £10.90 from 1 April.

Aldi recently said it would give a pay rise to over 28,000 employees working in its stores from 1 July 2023, while Tesco is increasing pay by seven per cent.
