Ikea set to open Oxford Street store on 1 May after extensive renovation

IKEA has announced it will open its highly anticipated Oxford Street store on Thursday, 1 May 2025, following a three-year renovation of the Grade II listed building at 214 Oxford Street in central London that previously housed Topshop.

The new flagship store will span three floors with a retail space of 5,800 square metres, offering the traditional IKEA experience including roomsets, a market hall with home furnishing accessories, and planning appointments with IKEA home furnishing experts.

Peter Jelkeby, chief executive officer and chief sustainability officer at IKEA UK said: "Whether a local Londoner or a tourist passing through, IKEA Oxford Street aims to inspire home dreams for everyone – offering beautifully designed, functional furnishings at prices affordable for as many people as possible, ensuring visitors leave with ideas and solutions that make everyday life at home a little better."

The ground floor will feature London-inspired spaces with curated shops co-created with Londoners, while the second level will house innovative roomsets and a 130-seater Swedish Deli where visitors can enjoy IKEA's signature meatballs with mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam and cream sauce for £4.95.

The lowest floor will be home to the market hall, offering a selection of 3,500 affordable home furnishing accessories and small furniture available for immediate purchase, with prices ranging from £0.75 for food storage items to £45 for a desk.

The renovation has involved complex work to enhance the building's environmental performance while preserving its heritage features. This includes replacing gas-fired boilers with energy-efficient air source heat pumps, installing improved insulation, and restoring the building's historic façade.

"We have worked carefully to ensure we maintain the character of this historic building whilst creating a modern retail environment for customers to explore and be inspired," Jelkeby added. "London is an iconic shopping destination, and we are thrilled to now have a home in its centre."

The opening follows the closure of the Hus of FRAKTA pop-up concept store on 23rd March. IKEA Oxford Street will be open daily from 10am until 8pm, with the store having received 3,730 applications in just six days for the 150 available positions.

The new store is expected to play a key role in the ongoing rejuvenation of Oxford Street, complementing IKEA's existing network of stores in London while being easily accessible by foot or public transport.
