Lidl is set to launch a new self-scan mobile app dubbed “Lidl Go”.
Customers will be able to scan items as they go via the app, before scanning a barcode generated by the app at the checkout.
However, customers will still have to pay for goods at the checkout.
The service will be initially piloted at a Lidl store in Fulwell, southwest London.
Lidl did not disclose if “Lidl Go” would eventually be integrated with its existing customer loyalty app “Lidl Plus”.
Lidl is not the only major supermarket which is currently introducing cashierless technology; Morrisons began testing a till-free concept at a pilot store for staff outside its head office in Bradford in July.
Other discounters may be eyeing a move towards self-scan technology; Aldi recently registered the trademark ‘Shop & Go’ according to sources reported by The Grocer.
Europe is leading the world in terms of self-scan technology according to analyst house RBR, with 18,000 stores in Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) allowing customers to scan items via their mobiles as they shop.
The report highlighted the UK, France, and the Netherlands as being particularly far ahead in terms of rolling out mobile self-scanning technology.
