Tesco to expand autonomous store trial

Tesco has announced an expansion of its GetGo stores trial to include two further stores in London and another in Birmingham.

The new sites, which are based in Chiswell Street Express in central London, Fulham Reach Express in Parrs Way, and Aston University Express in Aston, Birmingham, are due to open over the next few months.

In collaboration with technology company Trigo, GetGo uses a combination of cameras and weight-sensors establish what customers have picked up and charge them for products directly through the app when they leave the store.

Using GetGo, shoppers choose the checkout-free option and download the Tesco app. This enables shoppers to enter a store, choose their shopping, and scan their app as they walk out.

Tesco launched its first GetGo store in High Holborn in October 2021, and said that by using the app, the average shopper takes three minutes to complete their shop.

Kevin Tindall, managing director for Tesco Convenience, said: “We are excited to expand our trial of GetGo and to see what customers think about our new hybrid model, which offers them different options for seamless shopping.”

He added: “Whether customers choose the checkout-free option or prefer to use a checkout, we want to make the shopping trip as quick and convenient as possible.”
