Leading US supermarket chain Walmart has announced a partnership with Salesforce to provide its retail customers with in-store pickup and delivery services from Walmart’s network.
In a deal which the supermarket said would “unlock local fulfilment and delivery solutions for retailers’, the Walmart Commerce Technologies Store Assist local fulfilment app and Walmart GoLocal local delivery solutions will be available through Salesforce AppExchange.
The services will be available to businesses which use Salesforce’s ecommerce platforms to host and manage their websites. The pair promise that retailers will be able to offer faster order pickups and same or next-day deliveries to customers without the cost of building out their own delivery networks.
Walmart GoLocal is the company’s delivery-as-a-service business which launched in August 2021. It fulfils last-mile shipping needs for businesses at a significantly lower cost than if they were to develop their own network. It operates similarly to food delivery services like Uber Eats and DoorDash, with drivers on Walmart’s Spark Driver platform picking up orders from local stores or facilities to deliver them to doorsteps.
Walmart said that GoLocal has completed more than 3 million deliveries since its launch less than two years ago.
The Walmart Commerce Technologies Store Assist app meanwhile will be available to clients who use Salesforce’s Commerce Cloud and Order Management platform. It helps retailers to leverage their local stores as fulfilment centres, allowing retailers to optimise in-store fulfilment by increasing picking accuracy, speed and efficiency, Walmart said.
Anshu Bhardwaj, senior vice president, technology strategy and commercialisation, Walmart Global Technology, said: “Through this partnership, retailers can leverage the same innovative and scalable technologies that power Walmart’s pickup and delivery experiences.
“The same technology that powers Store Assist has enabled Walmart to fulfil over 830 million orders across over 4,700 Walmart stores. Together with Salesforce, retailers can scale their business and deliver the personalised, convenient experiences shoppers expect.”
Announcing their tie-up, the paid did not comment on how many customers they hope to sign, nor did they disclose whether retailers will have to pay per delivery or order. The services will be offered through Salesforce's AppExchange starting this spring.
