Wayfair rolls out AI-driven platform that builds home spaces

Wayfair, a retailer specialising in home furnishings, has launched an app that helps customers build home spaces inspired and generated by artificial intelligence (AI.)

The business said that ‘Muse’ is an application that offers a robust visual browsing experience, allowing customers to build a digital version of their aspirational home by providing rich images, home styles, and a variety of items to build custom collections by linking the search to Wayfair's product catalogue.

Boston-headquartered Wayfair generated $11.8 billion in net revenue for the 12 months ended 30  September 2024.

While customers build their own home, the company’s new app suggests complementary items that can be added to a customer’s ideal home and shopping list.

Customers can type in a specific style or room they are looking for with specific details and then browse the AI images and purchase recommended items or add items to their collections to review them later.

Users can then upload a photo of their space and incorporate previously saved collections on the app to see what the final layout would look like.

The app builds on Wayfair’s previous pilot called Decorify that allows customers to select from a few preset styles to see how their space could be transformed.

“Leveraging generative AI, we aim to elevate our search experience to be the best in the home category - seamlessly blending inspiration and shopping, to reaffirm our position as the premier destination for all things home,” said Fiona Tan, chief technology officer at Wayfair.

Shrenik Sadalgi, director of R&D at Wayfair, emphasised the importance of a personal shopping experience tailored to customers.

"Muse serves that need and is an endless inspiration engine giving customers the ability to spark an idea, bring their unique visions to life and even transform their existing spaces - all enabled by AI,” continued Sadalgi. “Muse fosters inspiration and helps you create a home that feels uniquely yours."
