Aldi hikes pay for in-store employees

Aldi is increasing pay for over 28,000 employees working in its stores from 1 July 2023.

Starting pay will increase to £11.40 per hour nationally and £12.85 within the M25, 13 per cent higher than a year ago.

Aldi claims that employees now receive the highest hourly rates in the industry, adding that it has invested over £100 million in the latest pay increase.

The budget retailer announced last year that pay would rise to a minimum of £10.50 per hour nationally and £11.95 for those working within the M25.

Aldi also announced a pay rise for its warehouse workers in the UK from 1 February. Pay will increase to a minimum rate of £13.48 per hour, a rise from £11.48 in January 2022.

The retailer claims it is the only supermarket to pay for breaks, which is worth on average around £927 annually for each employee.

Commenting on the news Giles Hurley, chief executive officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “We believe our colleagues are the best in the sector and we are committed to ensuring they are also the best paid.”

He added: “We are incredibly proud of every single member of Team Aldi and are pleased to become the first UK supermarket to pay a minimum of £11.40 per hour to all Store Assistants.”

Earlier this year, Tesco announced a pay rise of 72p per hour for staff working in stores.
