Amazon adds cashback feature to the Alexa app

Amazon has added a new cashback feature to the Alexa app , dubbed “Shopping List Savings” which will enable customers to swap their data for discounts.

The new feature will give consumers cashback in the form of an Amazon gift card after purchasing certain eligible items in third party stores, which can then be spent anywhere on Amazon.

Users will need to photograph the relevant receipts to access the new feature, granting Amazon access to their data.

Consumers will then receive their cash in between 24 to 48 hours, with the amount on offer differing on a per product basis.

The new feature is currently only available in the US.

Amazon is not the only retailer allowing US consumers to swap their data for discounts.

App such as Fetch and Ibotta currently operate on a comparable business model.

“By choosing to participate in the Alexa Shopping List Savings program we will get any information you provide, including receipt images and information we may extract from those receipts, and the offers you activate,” said an Amazon spokesperson. “You understand and acknowledge that your personal information may be shared with Amazon’s service providers.”

He added: “The information you give to us will be used and shared as described in the Amazon.com Privacy Notice.”

Retail should not be a high-risk occupation. As a company, we are focused on listening to our colleagues and customers to help them with the issues they are facing in-store and so far, the feedback on our body cameras has been excellent. They act as a great visual deterrent, help to de-escalate situations and overall, this project has significantly aided our goal to make the retail environment safer.
