John Lewis is creating more than 150 tech roles as part of its digital drive.
The retailer said that these new specialist jobs will help it get closer to customers online and address changing consumer habits.
The move comes as nearly 70 per cent of John Lewis sales are made online. This is up from 40 per cent two years ago.
Waitrose online sales also make up nearly a fifth of all its sales, increasing from 5 per cent in 2020.
John Lewis says it is looking to recruit engineers across a range of technologies including: software, cloud platforms, native apps, data engineering, and delivery.
“We have an industry leading team driving the digital growth of our two iconic brands, Waitrose and John Lewis. It's our partners who make the difference and we're really excited to be making this significant investment in growing our engineering talent,” said Sandra Christie, head of engineering at John Lewis Partnership.
Software engineers and delivery leads will work on customer-facing projects across the John Lewis and Waitrose websites, which collectively record 55 million visits every month.
New roles will also help boost the company’s apps, which make up nearly a quarter of sales for both brands.
