WHSmith opens Amazon-powered cashierless outlet

WHSmith has opened its first cashierless outlet at the LaGuardia Airport in New York.

The new outlet is powered by Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology.

The news comes after the BigTech first announced that it would be sharing its checkout-free technology with third parties in March 2020.

More companies worldwide are looking towards opening cashierless stores.

Earlier this month, Russian health food company VkusVill opened its first cashierless store in Moscow.

Dilip Kumar, vice president of physical retail and technology at Amazon, said: “Airport terminals can be very busy places, so we’re excited WHSmith has equipped their LaGuardia Airport store with our Just Walk Out technology.”

He added: “Amazon’s Just Walk Out shopping experience is designed to be convenient and effortless, so the new WHSmith store will be ideal for travellers who are in a hurry to pick up refreshments, reading materials, or gifts before or after their flights.”
