Amazon opens fourth cashierless UK supermarket

Amazon has opened its fourth cashierless UK supermarket in Canary Warf, which will operate under its “Amazon Fresh” brand.

The supermarket uses the e-commerce giant’s “Just Walk Out Shopping” technology, which uses a combination of cameras, sensors, and machine learning to detect when a customer puts items in their basket, and then automatically charges their account when they walk out.

The technology works via the Amazon mobile app but doesn’t require an Amazon Prime subscription to use.

Amazon has launched similar stores in Ealing, White City and Wembley over the past three months.

The 2,500 square feet supermarket is set to open from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm every day.

Amazon said it intends to open more supermarkets equipped with this technology in London but did not provide any additional detail.

Cashierless shopping technology continues to receive worldwide interest, in November 2020 Sydney-based firm Tiliter completed a $7.5 million capital raise to develop technology which uses computer vision to recognise products without barcodes.
